The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced the awarding of $260,000 in non-repayable financial assistance to James Bay Tourism and Eeyou Istchee Tourism. Granted through the
Community Diversification program, this funding will enable the two regional tourism associations, which will themselves invest a total of $270,000, to implement a well-targeted joint commercialization strategy.
The project involves promoting northern Quebec's distinctive products on national and foreign markets. The commercialization strategy will centre on the main attractions of fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, adventure tourism, eco-tourism and Aboriginal culture. In so doing, the James Bay and Cree organizations are hoping to create a unified brand image and highlight the authentic tourism experience the northern region has to offer.
"The entire Nord-du-Québec region stands to benefit from this pathbreaking collaboration between the Jamesian and Aboriginal tourism associations. Local tourist establishments and businesses will thus have prime showcases for raising their visibility and better promoting their services, particularly on the Ontario, American and European markets. This initiative of James Bay Tourism and Eeyou Istchee Tourism, organizations that are sparing no effort to improve the tourism offering, is sure to translate into an increase in foreign visitors. Canada Economic Development is pleased to lend its support to a project that also promises to strengthen the economic development of the region," explained the Minister of State.
The associations' commercialization strategy is the fruit of consensus-building among the business community and the enterprises that operate the region's many attractions. The activities will include, among other things, participation in specialty fairs and shows, organization of press tours and development of promotional tools for the 2010-2011 season.
